How to calculate the distance between earth and sun?
The only thing that travels (in constant speed) from sun to earth is light. The speed of light is known to us (i.e) 3 x (10⁸) m/s
The time taken for the sun rays to reach the earth is 8 min 20 sec.
So, here goes the calculation.

We all know that
speed = distance covered / time taken
In this case we know
i) the speed
3 x (10⁸) m/s
ii) the time taken
8 mins 20 sec
So we can easily find out the distance,
distance covered = speed x time taken
Solution:
In this, we should convert '8 min 20 sec' in sec,
1 min = 60 sec
So,
8 mins = 8 x 60 sec
= 480 sec
Therefore,
8 mins 20 sec = 480 sec + 20 sec
= 500 sec
distance covered = 3 x (10⁸) m/s x 500 sec
= 3 x 500 x (10⁸) m
= 1500 x (10⁸) m
= 1500 x 100,000,000
= 150,000,000,000 m
Therefore, the distance between earth and sun is 150,000,000,000 m
In km it is,
150,000,000,000 / 1000 km
150,000,000 km
Answer: The distance between earth and sum is 150,000,000,000 m or 150,000,000 km
